Covid vaccination certificates to ease EU travel shouldn't be for 'secondary uses,' say EDPB, EDPS

( April 6, 2021, 12:33 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A proposal for a "Digital Green Certificate" — which is meant to ease the free movement of EU citizens — should comply with the bloc's data protection rules, the European Data Protection Board and the European Data Protection Supervisor said in a joint opinion today. The two bodies highlighted the need to mitigate risks, such as possible "secondary" uses of the certificates. Authorities' use to allow entrance into restaurants, clubs or gyms "may lead to unintended consequences and risks to the fundamental rights of EU citizens." The EU institutions said that they welcome that the European Commission's proposal covers different conditions faced by EU citizens, including vaccinations, recovery and testing. However, the EDPB and EDPS said the commission should conduct an impact assessment.Press release is below. Opinion is attached....
