Malaysian NGO demands more powers for corruption watchdog

( August 9, 2016, 09:09 GMT | Insight) -- The Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs' chief operating officer, Tricia Yeoh, has proposed that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission be institutionally upgraded a a constitutionally-mandated Independent Anti-Corruption Commission with security of tenure for its 15 commissioners, Free Malaysia Today reports. The Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs', or IDEAS', chief operating officer, Tricia Yeoh, has proposed that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, or MACC, be institutionally upgraded a a constitutionally-mandated Independent Anti-Corruption Commission with security of tenure for its 15 commissioners, Free Malaysia Today reports. She said the MACC Act should also be revised to provide investigative powers to the relevant agencies, and urged a separation of the roles of attorney general and public prosecutor.  ...
