Lenovo settles FTC charges over selling laptops that harmed users' security

( September 5, 2017, 14:59 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Lenovo has agreed to settle charges by the US Federal Trade Commission and 32 state attorneys general that the company loaded software on some laptops that compromised security protections to deliver ads. As part of the settlement, Lenovo is prohibited from misrepresenting any features of software preloaded on laptops and must get consumers' affirmative consent before pre-installing software that can inject advertising into Internet browsing sessions or transmit sensitive consumer data to third parties. The company is also required for 20 years to implement a comprehensive software security program, which will be subject to third-party audits.Statement follows in full.
