Sugar cartelists don't have to pay damages to processors, Cologne court says

( October 9, 2020, 21:47 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Dairy companies, pastry and delicacy makers as well as brewers suffered a defeat at a regional court in Cologne today, after judges rejected four damage claims worth a total of 126 million euros against sugar makers Nordzucker, Südzucker and Pfeiffer & Langen, under which the sugar processors sought redress for having overpaid for industrial sugar as a result of territorial cartel agreements in place from April 1996 to March 2009. The cartel was fined 280 million euros by the German competition authority in 2014. In the ruling handed down today, the court said that it can't "be assumed with a clearly predominantly probability that the antitrust agreements between sugar manufacturers regarding processing sugar have led to increased prices.''Statement follows (in German). ...
