Epic files US complaint accusing Google, Samsung of keeping third-party app stores off phones

( September 30, 2024, 15:36 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Epic Games filed a US complaint accusing Google and Samsung of conspiring to keep out competition for app distribution on Android phones, following its win against Google in a separate antitrust trial. According to the complaint, Samsung implemented a default setting on its Galaxy phones that blocks all user attempts to download and install Android apps from any source that competes with the Play Store or Samsung’s own Galaxy Store. “The intended effect of Auto Blocker is clear: it would undo the remedies the court imposes on Google and doom any attempt to open for competition the market for Android app distribution. Indeed, given that Samsung sells more Android smartphones than any other smartphone manufacturer […], and that Samsung devices are the source of over half of the total revenue Google collects by taxing in-app sales made within Android apps, Auto Blocker is virtually guaranteed to entrench Google’s dominance over Android app distribution, preventing third-party app stores, such as the Epic Games Store, from reaching any sizable audience on Android,” Epic said.See document below. ...
