Indonesian palm-oil executives found guilty of export-permit corruption, but get short jail terms

By Jet Damazo-Santos ( January 5, 2023, 01:49 GMT | Insight) -- Three executives from some of Indonesia’s biggest palm oil groups — Permata Hijau Group, Wilmar Nabati Indonesia and Musim Mas — have been found guilty of corruption for illegally securing crude palm-oil export permits amid a cooking-oil shortage. But the Jakarta Anti-Corruption Court only sentenced them to jail terms of 12-18 months, because the judges said it was difficult to prove the claim that their actions cost the country massive economic losses. A high-profile Indonesian corruption case related to a national cooking-oil shortage last year has seen guilty verdicts for three executives from some of the country's biggest palm oil groups, but only short jail terms of 12-18 months.  ...
