Comment: Google faces avalanche of California mass tort claims over Chrome 'Incognito' mode, despite apparent adtech victories

By Mike Swift ( April 9, 2024, 22:10 GMT | Comment) -- Google scored in recent days what appeared to be two significant US court victories in its multi-year defense against a thicket of litigation over its collection of personal data through Chrome's "Incognito" private browsing mode. But this week, a surge of new mass tort complaints were filed by California Incognito users, even as Google told a federal judge that the plaintiffs' description of the negotiated settlement was full of "unsupported puffery" and a "fundamental mischaracterization" of the data Google would delete under the settlement.As Google battles a thicket of litigation that alleges its adtech business violated state and federal laws by selling users’ personal information, the Internet giant appeared to score two big wins last week. A closer look, however, suggests Google may be a long way from solving its adtech litigation troubles....
