WTO panels find US steel and aluminum tariffs illegal

( December 9, 2022, 20:00 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The World Trade Organization’s dispute settlement panels ruled today that the US steel and aluminum tariffs, imposed in 2018 by the Trump administration, are illegal. The panels, sitting to review cases brought by China, Norway, Switzerland and Turkey, found the US measures to be inconsistent with the WTO's General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. Justifying the move, the US invoked the "security exceptions" in Article XXI of the GATT and argued that its invocation was a "self-judging" and "non-justiciable" defense to all claims advanced by the complainants, and that the panels could not make any findings in these disputes other than noting that the US had invoked this exception.Rulings are attached. ...
