Comment: Visa likely to advance security, discount justifications to aid defense against US DOJ antitrust case

After the US Department of Justice announced it was suing Visa for allegedly monopolizing debit markets, the payments company quickly released a statement in which its general counsel, Julie Rottenberg, called the lawsuit “meritless” and said that when “businesses and consumers choose Visa, it is because of our secure and reliable network, world-class fraud protection, and the value we provide.” Visa appears to be mounting a defense to monopolization claims from the US government that in part emphasizes purported security, business and consumer benefits provided by the company’s vast debit network — arguments that could be similar to claims Apple has promoted when also fighting off antitrust attacks....
