South Korea's Techlabs fined for creating fake profiles with user photos on dating apps

( September 26, 2024, 06:01 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Techlabs, a South Korean operator of dating apps, has been fined 224 million won (about $168,000) by the country’s privacy regulator for creating false profiles using photos of existing users from one of their data apps. The Personal Information Protection Commission discovered that the dating-app company, operating dating apps in South Korea and Taiwan, created a total of 276 fake profiles from 2020 to 2021, some of which were even matched with real users. The regulator determined that the company’s use of profile images without consent from users exceeded the original scope of personal data usage. The regulator deemed it a serious violation of privacy and decided to refer the case to the police for a criminal investigation. The statement, in Korean, is attached....
