Vietnam publishes draft comprehensive personal-data protection law for comment

( September 24, 2024, 07:24 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security has published for comment its draft personal data protection law, which is expected to be submitted to the National Assembly for approval in May 2025, and to go into effect on Jan. 1, 2026. The planned law, which builds on the personal data protection decree issued in April 2023, will apply to individuals and organizations, both domestic and international, with personal data-processing activities in Vietnam. It also addresses specific personal data issues in cloud computing, artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies like blockchain. The draft maintains the 72-hour deadline to respond to data subject right requests and outlines strict consent requirements, with exceptions for purposes related to national defense, public security, contractual obligations or when there is a threat to life and health. The draft law and the ministry's proposal are attached. ...
