Deal on EU’s higher climate goal shouldn’t be ‘conditional’ on detailed policies, Timmermans says

( October 1, 2020, 10:22 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: An agreement on a revamped EU-wide goal for emissions reduction by 2030 should not be made “conditional upon detailed policy proposals,” the bloc’s climate chief Frans Timmermans told EU environment ministers today, at a virtual gathering of an informal Council of the EU. In September, the European Commission proposed to raise a target set at 40 percent to at least 55 percent based on 1990 emission levels, and to present legislative proposals to revise the bloc’s climate and energy rules instrumental to reach the higher objective by June 2021. “At the commission, we will carry out further analysis in the coming months,” Timmermans also told the ministers, stressing that he will focus on the “distributional impacts” of all upcoming legislative proposals.Full speech follows....
