Keen observers, including the economist behind country's most recent large-scale competition inquiry, believe that Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers' promise to work with his state and territory counterparts to revamp the National Competition Policy may finally deliver the political buy-in required for genuine policy change. Since coming to power in 2022, Australia’s center-left government has made no secret of its desire to update the country’s competition policy settings. In the past 12 months alone it has launched new reviews of merger laws, supermarkets, restrictive employment contracts — even airport landings slots....
