Lawyers accusing Meta's AI of copyright violations in milestone case blasted by US judge

By Mike Swift ( September 20, 2024, 23:36 GMT | Insight) -- The legal team representing a group of authors who say Meta Platforms violated copyright law by using their protected works to train its generative artificial intelligence systems received a remarkable rebuke from a US judge in San Francisco today, who said the plaintiffs' legal team might not be capable of pursing what could be a landmark first decision by a US court about whether using copyrighted works to train large language models is a legal fair use. US District Judge Vince Chhabria said the plaintiffs' lawyers appear to be "unwilling or unable to litigate properly."In what could be a watershed first decision by a US court about whether the use of copyrighted works to train a generative AI system is legal fair use, a federal judge excoriated the legal team suing Meta Platforms over its use of the works of comedian Sarah Silverman and other celebrity authors....
