LINE data breach sees Japan's LY Corp hit with PPC corrective recommendation

( March 28, 2024, 06:27 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: LY Corporation, the operator of Japan's largest messaging app LINE, was hit today with the privacy commission’s corrective recommendation over a data breach. The Personal Information Protection Commission said that nearly 520,000 individuals’ personal data were exposed through a personal computer used by its South Korean contractor that contained malware. The attacker was able to access the personal data of LINE users, business partners and employees, through LY’s Korean affiliate Naver Cloud, a subsidiary of Naver, a part-owner of LINE. The PPC said the incident took place because LY allowed Naver Cloud broad access to LINE-related data, without adequate security measures in place. LY also failed to properly supervise Naver Cloud as its contractor and took more than three month to grasp the seriousness of the situation because the Japanese tech company relied on Naver and Naver Cloud for the management of LINE data.
