​Companies, public bodies can share personal data with police, UK regulator says

( April 12, 2019, 09:32 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The UK Information Commissioner's Office says it has dispelled the myth that new data-protection rules prevent companies and public organizations from disclosing personal information to law-enforcement authorities. The UK law implementing the EU's General Data Protection Regulation, which took effect last May, spells out rules about processing of data for law-enforcement purposes, said Steve Wood, the ICO's deputy commissioner for policy. "Requests for information made by competent authorities must be reasonable in the context of their law-enforcement purpose, and the necessity for the request should be clearly explained to the organization," Wood said.
