UK companies may see more flexible privacy enforcement during Covid-19, watchdog says

( September 24, 2020, 16:01 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Companies facing enforcement action from the UK's privacy watchdog are likely to be given more time to rectify low-risk breaches or see their fines reduced due to Covid-19, the Information Commissioner's Office said in a statement. The ICO plans to focus on cases "that present the greatest harm to the public" and data-protection breaches aimed at taking advantage of the pandemic. Commissioner Elizabeth Denham argued that working hand-in-hand with businesses, as opposed to just handing out hefty fines under the EU's strict privacy law, is "the most effective way of reducing mistakes and misuse of people's data."Statement follows.
