Thiess accused of corruption in India followed by cover-up
( April 7, 2016, 04:46 GMT | Insight) -- Australian mining company Thiess, a subsidiary of Leighton Holdings, has been accused of agreeing to allow a fixer named Syam Reddy to use his influence to help secure a A$6 billion ($4.5 billion) Indian coal mining contract in 2008, the Sydney Morning Herald reports. In return, Thiess would allegedly give a Reddy company work at the mine, which was said to have earned him A$2.2 billion over 20 years. The findings were outlined in a forensic report by Deloitte investigators for Thiess in 2012. The Deloitte report concluded that although Thiess had not made any payments to Reddy, its senior managers had abundant knowledge that Reddy had in his representation of Thiess made "corrupt" payments or promises to Indian officials. The Sydney Morning Herald report added that Leighton Holdings and Thiess had done nothing to act on the Deloitte report. ...
