India finalizes rules for intermediaries, digital media and streaming platforms

( February 25, 2021, 09:00 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: India has finalized a sweeping set of new rules to regulate intermediaries, digital media and streaming platforms. Intermediaries will have to remove content flagged by the government within 36 hours and additional obligations on “significant social media” will require them to identify content originators and to appoint a local compliance officer. The Information Technology (Guidelines for Intermediaries and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021 will come into force on the day they are officially published, IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said at a press conference today, except for significant social media companies, which will get three months extra.
