US HIPAA regulator releases updated guidelines for online tracking technologies

( March 18, 2024, 23:14 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Office for Civil Rights within the US Department of Health and Human Services has released updated guidance on the use of online tracking tools such as Meta Pixel and Google Analytics for personal health information covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). "Regulated entities are not permitted to use tracking technologies in a manner that would result in impermissible disclosures of PHI to tracking technology vendors or any other violations of the HIPAA Rules," OCR said. "For example, disclosures of PHI to tracking technology vendors for marketing purposes, without individuals’ HIPAA-compliant authorizations, would constitute impermissible disclosures."Text of OCR statement follows in full.
