Personal data breaches criminalized by Myanmar military junta in electronic transactions law amendment

( February 22, 2021, 04:06 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Myanmar's military junta has announced amendments to its electronic transactions law, including the criminalization of failure to manage personal data, various forms of sharing or modifying personal data, hacking and spreading false information, with sanctions of up to seven years in jail. The human rights group Free Expression Myanmar claims the amendments copied provisions from the controversial cybersecurity bill announced earlier this month, which appears to have been shelved after a massive backlash. While the amendments do not explicitly regulate intermediaries like Facebook, Google, and Telenor to the same extent as the cybersecurity bill, the group said the amendments are too vague and overly-broad, raising the risk of abuse and misuse. The full statement follows and an unofficial translation of the draft law is attached:...
