Judge Luiz Fux takes office as president of the Brazilian Supreme Court

( September 10, 2020, 13:32 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Brazil’s top court has a new presiding judge, as judge Luiz Fux took office for his two-year mandate as the president of the Supreme Federal Court (STF). In his speech, Fux said during his tenure, the court’s “north” will be strengthening STF’s constitutional mandate as the guardian of the Constitution while also guaranteeing the harmony between the powers. Fux criticized what he called an “epidemic judicialization” of political conflicts and called for a reduction in the number of cases analyzed by the country’s top court by reinforcing the application of precedents and the correct application by lower instances of the Judiciary. Fux also stated that under his watch STF “will not admit” setbacks in the fight against corruption and made a direct reference to “successful investigations” in the Operation Car Wash probe. Fux replaced judge Dias Toffolli as STF's president. STF's full statement and Fux's full inauguration speech follow below (in Portuguese):...
