New penalties, enforcement powers welcomed by Australia's privacy watchdog

( November 29, 2022, 01:26 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: New legislation that increases penalties for serious or repeated privacy breaches will bring Australia into closer alignment with international penalties available under the European Union’s General Data Privacy Regulation, the country’s competition watchdog has said. In a statement published today, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner welcomed parliament’s approval of the Privacy Legislation Amendment (Enforcement and Other Measures) Bill 2022, which will boost penalties and award the regulator greater enforcement powers in dealing with data breaches. Privacy Commissioner Angelene Falk said that the changes would also provide her agency with new information-sharing powers that will “facilitate engagement with domestic regulators and our international counterparts.”The full statement from the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner follows: ...
