Japan to start regulating large platforms in digital advertising later this year

( May 16, 2022, 07:59 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Large platforms in the digital advertising market will be regulated later this year, from around autumn, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said. A working group under the Headquarters for Digital Market Competition agreed today on a plan to draft rules and ordinances to regulate the digital-ad sector under the Act on Improvement of Transparency and Fairness in Trading on Specified Digital Platforms. Target companies, to be designated according to the size of domestic ad revenues, will be required to disclose items such as standards to determine ad frauds, policies over transactions that could lead to conflicts of interest or self-preferencing, as well as the nature of data they collect from advertisers and publishes for ad-placement matching. Search-related matters, such as requiring the disclosure of parameter changes for ranking algorithms and setting up offices to handle complaints, will be addressed in future studies.
