MLex Comment: S&N takeover dodges immediate regulatory concerns, but closer scrutiny for brewers may lie ahead

But the removal of S&N as a competitor reinforces an emerging oligopoly among European beer producers. This might be a cause for concern among competition regulators in the future.Heineken is endeavouring to acquire Scottish & Newcastle (S&N) in a joint effort with Danish brewery Carlsberg. The proposed acquisition was announced 17 Oct 2007. If successful, Heineken would gain control of Scottish & Newcastle's business in the UK, Ireland, most continental countries and India while Carlsberg would acquire S&N's stake in BBH and its French and Greek businesses. BBH is a 50/50 joint venture between Carlsberg and S&N, primarily active in Russia and the Baltic states....
