Clarity for ‘consent or pay’ website business model sought via UK data watchdog consultation

( March 6, 2024, 12:15 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The online advertising sector is expected to gain more clarity on data protection regarding the “pay or consent” model for websites, as the privacy regulator opens a consultation today. The approach offers users the choice of paying a fee or continuing for free but consenting for their personal information to be used for targeted advertising. The Information Commissioner’s Office is calling for opinions to inform its guidance on how companies can comply with data protection while pursuing pay or consent. The consultation, which runs until April 17, is part of the ICO’s overall work on cookies. It will also consult on its updated guidance on these technologies later in the year.Statement follows:...
