Japan communication ministry to push for elimination of mobile carrier switching fee

( August 28, 2020, 03:37 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication yesterday submitted a draft report pushing for the elimination of the fee consumers must currently pay to switch mobile carriers. The report, submitted to the ministry’s panel on mobile phone competition, pointed to the lack of justification for the 3,000 yen (US$28) fee mobile users must pay to their old carrier when switching. The ministry pointed to the anti-competitive nature of the fee, and said that switching carriers via the Internet should be free, and lowered for those making the switch over the phone or in person. The report also noted that other switching costs, in the form of excessive discounts and services to prevent users from leaving their carriers to switch to cheaper mobile virtual network operators, need to be regulated.
