South Korean committee aims to scrutinize Naver, Kakao, YouTube over news algorithms, content moderation

The committee said today that Naver and Kakao are increasingly becoming a source of misinformation and fake news, helped by algorithms that play a greater role in shaping and spreading information. The committee is calling for the creation of a transparency committee to oversee tech companies’ news algorithms. To combat the influence tech companies have on news, the committee said it could consider having portals run by Naver and Kakao change their front-page layouts, which includes news listings and other recommended content, to solve the issue of biased algorithms. It also vowed to have YouTube review rules that restrict, limit, and delete hateful content and provide explanations for its content moderation.The statement, in Korean, is attached....
