'Ex ante' regulations proposed by Japan's report on mobile ecosystems

( April 26, 2022, 04:07 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: "Ex ante" regulations that apply to future events may be desirable to regulate mobile ecosystems in which Google and Apple play dominant roles at various levels of those ecosystems, Japan’s cabinet-level competition panel said today, after finding that combination of various self-preferencing rules and practices may be stifling competition and depriving the consumers of options. The panel under the Headquarters for Digital Market Competition has proposed to consider ex-ante rules to create level playing fields in smartphone operating systems, app stores and other areas, and is now accepting public comment on the proposal. The panel also published another interim report on voice assistance and wearable devices as new contact points with the consumers. The panel has suggested that because these markets may be dominated by few players, they should be monitored and rules may need to be considered to allow the government to intervene when necessary.
