TikTok in Japan likely to be regulated by existing legal framework, ruling-party lawmaker says

In the US, the app’s owner ByteDance, is facing divestiture of its operations or a ban because of data security concerns, but in Japan, an influential lawmakers’ group is preparing a government proposal to safeguard users' data by mid-September. In the wake of the ultimatum directed at TikTok in the US, where the popular app faces either a ban or new ownership (see here), a Japanese lawmakers’ group from the governing Liberal Democratic Party, or LDP, is accelerating a study on how to use existing regulations to protect Japanese citizens’ personal data that is collected by the Chinese-owned app....
