DOJ official presses Congress to amend law to allow UK to access digital data from US providers

( February 24, 2016, 23:27 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: In prepared testimony for a Feb. 25 hearing, the US Department of Justice's David Bitkower pressed members of a US House panel to amend US laws governing access to electronic data to allow US providers to give direct access to UK law enforcement for use in criminal or national security investigations. Bitkower, the principal deputy assistant attorney general for the criminal division, said the UK would offer reciprocal access to the US for information stored in the UK. Bitkower also said the agency opposes proposals contained in the Law Enforcement Access to Data Stored Abroad, or LEADS Act, because it would impair the DOJ's ability to investigate crimes.See testimony below....
