Uber to pay $28.5 million to settle lawsuit over 'Safe Rides Fee' and alleged misrepresentation of driver background checks

Tigar to approve a $28.5 million settlement of litigation that alleged the smartphone app car-hailing service violated California's False Advertising Law and other state laws by misrepresenting the “Safe Rides Fee” Uber collected from users, and the nature of the background checks on drivers that it actually performed. The proposed $28.5 million settlement fund presents an overall value of approximately $1.14 per Class Member, based on a Class size of 25 million Members, Uber told Tigar in the filing, with the settelment fund being paid to any US Uber rider between Jan. 1, 2013 and Jan. 31, 2016.Please see attached motion for preliminary settlement approval....
