Rio Tinto files antitrust complaint against its energy supplier in Iceland

( July 22, 2020, 21:39 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Rio Tinto has filed a formal complaint at the Icelandic Competition Authority against Landsvirkjun, alleging that the company, which supplies energy to Rio Tinto's ISAL aluminum smelter, abused its market power through discriminatory pricing and long-term power contracts. ISAL pays much more for its energy than other aluminum producers in the country do, which undermines its competitive position in the market, said Alf Barrios, chief executive at Rio Tinto's aluminum division. Rio Tinto cannot continue producing aluminum in Iceland if the power-pricing system isn't transparent, fair and globally competitive, Barrios added, calling on the watchdog to address the issue, otherwise the country could lose export industries with major employment such as ISAL.
