Thai government to tighten control over Chinese fruit traders

( February 10, 2016, 05:19 GMT | Insight) -- Thailand’s government will more closely monitor the country's trade in fruits, because Chinese traders are increasingly dealing directly with fruit growers instead of Thai brokers, the Bangkok Post reports.Thailand’s government will more closely monitor the country's trade in fruits, because Chinese traders are increasingly dealing directly with fruit growers instead of Thai brokers, the Bangkok Post reports. Although this stimulates beneficial competition in the short term, the Commerce Ministry is concerned Chinese traders will eventually dominate the local market and drive down prices. All traders will soon be required to register with the ministry, and standardized purchase contracts will be introduced. The ministry also recommend that wheat, mangosteen, durian and longan be included on a price control list. Thailand’s fruit shipments to China totaled 12.6 billion baht ($355 million) in 2014....
