Portuguese Government: Court of Justice of the EU about the special rights of the state in PT

( July 9, 2010, 08:39 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Portuguese government has expressed its disagreement with the legal position of the Court of Justice of the EU on the special rights (golden shares) that the Portuguese state holds in Portugal Telecom. Minister Pedro Silva Pereira said the court ruling "in no way diminishes government's determination to safeguard national interests" and that the special statute would remain in place. The issue of golden shares in PT was highlighted by the attempted purchase of PT shares in Brazilian telecoms operator Vivo by Spanish operator Telefonica, which the Portuguese government opposed on the grounds that the Spanish company's proposal did not protect the strategic interests of the country and TPT. The full statement follows (in Portuguese):...
