UK defense ministry to pay GBP350,000 after data authority issues rare public body fine

( December 13, 2023, 00:01 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Ministry of Defence has received a 350,000 pound ($440,000) fine for data breaches, in a rare enforcement from the Information Commissioner’s Office. The ICO usually doesn't fine public bodies. The breaches exposed the personal details of 256 Afghans in September 2021. During the Taliban’s recapture of Afghanistan, defense officials revealed the information of Afghans who had worked for or with the UK government and were seeking relocation to the UK, by including them in the “To” section of three emails. The department has since introduced new checks for sending out emails to multiple people. The fine was originally one million pounds, reduced to 700,000 following the department’s actions and reduced again to 350,000 because of the ICO’s policy on fining public bodies. “This was a particularly egregious breach of the obligation of security owed to these people, thus warranting the financial penalty my office imposes today,” commissioner John Edwards said.Statement follows:...
