European Parliament Statement: Industry Committee favours increased use of carbon credits to offset 2005 emissions

( September 23, 2008, 08:51 GMT | Official Statement) -- ****************************************MLex-e3 Summary: The European Parliament's Industry Committee has voted in favour of increasing the amount of carbon credits member states may purchase to offset emissions in sectors not covered by the EU's Emission Trading Scheme (ETS). The European Commission's original proposal had set the limit on the use of these credits at 3 per cent. The new threshold of 4 per cent will be valid until an international agreement is reached. The amendment by the Industry Committee was approved by a narrow majority with 21 votes in favour, 20 votes against and four abstentions....
