Google must weigh privacy against free speech in de-listing requests, EU court opinion says

( January 10, 2019, 09:12 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Google and other search engines must weigh privacy against freedom of expression when dealing with requests to de-list sensitive data, an adviser to the EU’s highest court said in a non-binding opinion published today. Maciej Szpunar said that when search engines deal with a request relating to personal data which have become inaccurate, the operator of a search engine should conduct a balancing exercise on a case-by-case basis. In a hearing in September 2018, Google told the Court of Justice that freedom of expression should outweigh the protection of sensitive personal data, in a dispute between the search engine and four French citizens who are seeking to delete links to webpages about them.The court document is attached....
