Expert witnesses for Epic Games, Google take stand as US app store antitrust trial continues

By Mike Swift ( November 22, 2023, 01:00 GMT | Insight) -- Epic Games and Google presented a federal jury with two widely divergent views from expert witnesses from each company about Android's restrictions on "sideloading" apps from sources other than the Google Play app store, as the antitrust trial over app distribution on Android phones and Google's in-app payment processing rules continued today in San Francisco. Today’s testimony previewed potential remedies if Google were to lose the trial, with Epic’s expert witness, Harvard computer scientist James Mickens, saying the court could order Google to review the security of all Android apps, including those available on other, non-Google app stores.Google erected a thicket of artificial hurdles and “scary” warnings about apps from sources other than the Google Play store that purported to protect Android users but were calibrated to hamper competing app stores like Amazon’s, a federal jury heard today as Epic Games pressed its antitrust case in San Francisco.  ...
