Bank fraud conviction reversed for wife of former Mexican official

( November 29, 2018, 22:32 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The US Fifth Circuit has reversed the bank fraud conviction of Silvia Beatriz Perez-Ceballos. The appellate court said that the US government had not presented evidence that she had defrauded JP Morgan Chase Bank, an FDIC-insured bank covered by US bank fraud laws. The court said that the evidence at the trial supported allegations that she made false statements to non-FDIC-insured institutions, such as Chase Investments. "In the absence of sufficient evidence the Perez-Ceballos made false statements to Chase Bnak or that she made false statements to another party while intending to obtain money from Chase Bank in a way that exposed Chase Bank to a risk of loss, the government failed to prove that Perez-Ceballos defrauded Chase Bank," the opinion said. Perez-Ceballos was the wife of a former minister of the Mexican state of Tabasco. Please see attached opinion....
