Japan's mobile-phone pricing system should be overhauled, possibly through legislation, ministry panel proposes

( November 27, 2018, 05:52 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Japan’s mobile-phone sales practices should be overhauled by prohibiting carriers from offering discounts on communications fees to customers buying new phones, and to separate the device and communications fees completely, possibly through an amendment of the country's telecoms law, a joint panel by experts under the communications ministry has proposed. The joint panel also proposed conducting a sweeping review of the multi-year pricing plans by carriers, which tend to restrict consumers from switching to other carriers, and to require mobile-phone shops to notify the government of their business. The communications ministry has started accepting public opinions on the draft proposal until Dec. 18, with the aim of finalizing the proposal in January next year....
