Appearing in a search-monopoly trial, Jeff Hurst said that in 2015, Expedia spent $21 million on Google ads; in 2016, Expedia’s advertising spend more than doubled and finally shot up to $290 million in 2019, but the number of visits to its website increased only slightly.
