DOJ requires divestiture before approving Tyson-Hillshire deal

( August 27, 2014, 18:27 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The US Department of Justice said Wednesday it will require Tyson Foods to sell off Heinold Hog Markets, its sow purchasing business, before approving Tyson's planned $8.55 billion acquisition of Hillshire Brands. The agency said that without the required divestiture the transaction would combine companies that account for more than a third of sow purchases from US farmers, reducing competition for sales of sows from farmers. The attorneys general of Illinois, Iowa and MIssouri joined the agency in the civil lawsuit filed in the US District Court for the District of Columbia to block the transaction as originally proposed.  Statement follows in full....
