Google beats data protection class action in UK Supreme Court

( November 10, 2021, 10:18 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex summary: The UK Supreme Court has ruled in favor of Google in a case brought by consumer campaigner Richard Lloyd over the "Safari workaround," which saw Google allegedly gather the data of around 5.4 million iPhone users by bypassing default privacy settings on Apple’s Safari Internet browser. The Supreme Court ruled that Lloyd cannot claim damages only for a contravention of data protection law, saying harm such as financial loss or mental distress is a necessary component.  Press statement follows.
