Japan's LINE messaging app lacked proper risk assessment of China government's access to data, report finds

( October 18, 2021, 08:19 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Japan’s messaging app LINE was found to have inadequate risk assessment involving the Chinese government's access to data, a third-party committee looking into the company’s foreign data access concluded in its final report today. The independent committee concluded its six-month probe of LINE after it was revealed in March that the company had granted its Chinese affiliate staff access to Japanese user data stored on Japanese servers. LINE also revealed that it stored some user-uploaded images on its South Korean servers while telling users and the Japanese government the data was kept within Japan’s borders. While the probe found no evidence of Chinese government access, the company should have better managed the “economic security owing to heightened US-China geopolitical tensions,” it said. The group called for LINE’s parent company Z Holdings Corp to appoint a Data Protection Officer and conduct privacy impact assessments.The final report, in Japanese, is attached....
