South Korea releases guidelines to address 'dark patterns' in online marketplace

( July 31, 2023, 03:48 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Korea Fair Trade Commission released voluntary guidelines on online “dark patterns,” which specifies 19 problematic conducts in the online marketplace and offers recommendations to businesses and users on how to steer clear of potential harm caused by such practices. The “dark pattern” practices detailed in the guidelines include tactics like making it difficult for consumers to cancel subscriptions, hiding additional costs from consumers until the final checkout page and adding items to the shopping cart without the consumer’s awareness. In response to some “severe” practices with potential risks of consumer harm, the KFTC submitted a revision to the e-commerce law to the National Assembly in April to regulate them more effectively.
