Japan's Sumco to receive subsidy for domestic production of silicon wafers, under economic security law

( July 14, 2023, 09:31 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Japan’s major silicon wafer maker Sumco said today that its project to expand silicon wafer production in Saga prefecture in southern Kyushu island was approved by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, or METI, to receive a subsidy to strengthen the domestic supply of components that are necessary to manufacture semiconductors. Under the Economic Security Promotion Act, the Japanese government has been providing a series of grants to strengthen domestic supply of key items, including semiconductors and batteries. To assist Sumco’s plan to manufacture 300-millimeter silicon wafers at two factories in Saga, METI is going to provide up to 75 billion yen ($542 million), or one third of the project cost. Sumco became the 11th company to receive a subsidy for the domestic supply of chips, according to METI. A statement in Japanese is attached....
