Limiting private-hire vehicle licenses in Barcelona goes against EU rules, top court says

( June 8, 2023, 09:21 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Limiting the number of private-hire vehicle licenses in the Barcelona metropolitan area constitutes restrictions on the freedom of establishment, the EU's highest court said today. A second requirement for an additional specific local license also constitutes such a restriction but may be justified under certain circumstances. The court found, though, that the two requirements don't involve state aid for taxi service providers. Today's ruling comes in response to questions to the EU Court of Justice from the Supreme Court of the Spanish region of Catalonia looking into dispute between taxi service Prestige & Limousine and Área Metropolitana de Barcelona.Statement follows.
