Malaysia delayed merger control to bolster antitrust watchdog, MyCC chief says
By James Konstantin Galvez ( August 5, 2026, 08:58 GMT | Insight) -- Malaysia postponed plans to introduce economy-wide merger control to give the Malaysia Competition Commission time to strengthen its investigative and enforcement capabilities before assuming broader competition powers, Chief Executive Officer Iskandar Ismail told MLex. The government split long-planned amendments into two phases after adopting the 13th Malaysia Plan, under which competition powers now exercised by sector regulators will eventually be centralized under the MyCC. Despite the delay, Ismail said work on designing the merger regime is continuing in parallel with implementation of the amended Competition Act.Malaysia deferred introducing economy-wide merger control to give its competition regulator time to strengthen its investigative and enforcement capabilities before taking on broader responsibilities under a planned overhaul of the country's competition regime, according to the country's antitrust chief....
