South Korean civic groups denounce US House report on Coupang as distorted
( July 3, 2026, 04:51 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A coalition of 135 South Korean labor and civil-society groups on Friday called on the US House Judiciary Committee to withdraw its recent report criticizing Seoul’s treatment of Coupang, calling it distorted and one-sided. In a protest outside the US embassy in Seoul, where they also delivered a protest letter, the groups said the report uncritically echoed Coupang’s claims and misrepresented South Korea’s enforcement over the company’s record privacy breach, which exposed data linked to about 33.7 million people. They argued South Korean authorities apply the same legal standards to domestic and foreign companies alike and rejected the report’s suggestion that Seoul’s digital-platform regulation unfairly targets US companies. The coalition urged the South Korean government to respond more firmly to what it described as improper US interference in domestic regulation.Statement is attached (in Korean)....
